Sabrina & the Gems have been rocking the Hudson Valley with their distinctive psychedelic funk/rock for the last 7 years. In the beginning Sabrina brought her spoken word to the mix, adding her poetry to Rennie Cantine's soaring guitar licks. A year in Sabrina started singing her own originals with the band and started crushing it on guitars to complete the picture. After that first gig singing, Rennie suggested we all get together every Friday for the rest of our lives and make music ! 6 years later Sabrina & the Gems have done just that... hundreds of gigs, rehearsals, parties, Fireworks, their record "The Dream that Woke you", and appearances on WDST (thx Gattine !)
Sabrina tells it like this... "From the wheat fields and gypsum plateaus of northwest Oklahoma, my affinity for words led me to relocate to the beautiful mountains and rich artistic history of the Catskills. In my time here, I have since compiled hundreds of pages of poetry that now live in song. I had performed spoken word at many local venues and Rennie asked me to sit in with his band... ever since I have picked up my guitar, pulled up a mic, and written dozens of songs with the Gems. We are so close to finishing our second record."
Drawing comparisons to Grace Slick, Joan Jett and Ani Defranco, Sabrina shrugs it off... "we are here to tell it like we see it... stand up for our friends and family... and rock it hard". With Johnny Nitcher bringing years of his Punk /Ska/Rock sentiment to his grooving bass lines, and Mike Dubois laying down his phat drum signatures to the songs, Sabrina & the Gems have carved out their own sound. Woodstock's Guitar Laureate Rennie Cantine will be bringing Ben Prevo's old 1969 Black Top Les Paul (signed by the master), Tom Glazel's old Frankenstrat, a Veillette or two, and the Strat and Fender Twin Joe Beesmer gave him on his way up. Rennie says he is honored to play the Woodstock Historical Concert alongside the Mark Black Band, and special guests on April 8th at the Mescal Hornbeck Center.
